Sorry for the doge title, but as the title says clear valve covers look pretty cool. Not sure if it's the next big thing, but it is defiantly unique. I can't really think of any downsides to doing such a thing, but here is a video of someone who put it on their hotrod.

Saw this on Facebook, posted by Car Memes I believe. Looks cool to me. They're only going to stay clear for a little while though because the oil will spatter all over the place. I hope the material used can withstand heat!

Exactly where I got it from. But who knows, if you make it thick enough and of a high enough heat resistant material, it should be alright.

Minor correction: I believe that is a clear valve cover.

Anyway neat find.

these are around 40 years old (well maybe not the exact ones in the video)

Kleer Vue made them in the late 70's, pretty sure it's Lexan.

My first time seeing them. I thought about looking this up like years ago but never actually did. It would be cool if you could make a carburetor clear, or even a clear turbo. Fun to think about though, but probably not likely.

(update: I found some Lexan air scoops for carbs)

you could probably make a compressor housing clear, they don't get insanely hot. but you can see the compressor wheel by taking the intake pipe off anyway.

I believe the next big thing is going to be NO valve cover + 10 mile oil changes.

Probably not. I used to design pumps and we made an acrylic pump cover (looks just like a turbo) and it shattered within a few minutes of running. The problem is the vibration of everything breaks the flanges right off, not to mention the pressure building up inside

Of course acryllic wouldnt be good enough, there are stronger materials out there.
A clear ceramic would be better but prohibitively expensive. That said the only people wanting clear turbos would be show cars, and you could just port all the boost so it never holds any pressure and make it out of glass.
